Short films are short for a reason and don’t need to be long! But why exactly is that?

Directly to application.

In their shortness, they are entertaining, as well as moving; sensitive, as well as brutal; but one thing they always do is manage to take our breath away in the shortest amount of time. Regardless whether a short film consists of 30 or only 3 minutes – in its narrative and experimental form, short film doesn’t require a lot of time to immerse its viewers and take them on a journey to another world.

Within this quality of short film lies what fascinates us the most about them. For this reason we aim to help these films reach a wider audience.

Since its beginnings in 2003, the Filmfest Düsseldorf has been organised and hosted by us – the film enthusiastic students of the institute for culture and media studies.

What once began as a small project, with only a few visitors at the Heinrich-Heine-Universität in Düsseldorf, soon turned into a large event, which became to be well known beyond the limits of the university. Now we attract around 2000 visitors every year!

Each year, we present short films of regional, national and international filmmakers, to have them then judged and honored with a price by a competent jury, as well as by our audience. Therefore the Filmfest Düsseldorf offers a platform for anyone who is interested in and fascinated by short films.

19.- 21. November 2014
Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf; the grand finale will take place in the film museum in Düsseldorf.

In addition, our team is well supported by a number of cooperation partners: one of those is the Filmmuseum Düsseldorf, which has repeatedly proven to be an amazing setting for the Filmfest’s grand finale.

In order to achieve long-term goals, provide a stable structure and expand on the framework conditions, the registered association “Filmfest Düsseldorf e.V.” was founded in 2010. The association consists of current and former participants, friends, as well as sponsors. However, the event – from the first conceptual ideas to the final awards – lies completely in the hands of students. Every year, more than 50 committed media and culture students gather together to accomplish this project.

We are truly fascinated by the way short films manage to tell an engaging story, within no more than a few minutes. Join us to explore this very phenomenon at the Filmfest Düsseldorf and let yourself be intoxicated and overwhelmed by the short masterpieces we have to offer each year.

We are looking forward to welcoming many new contestants and visitors and invite all of you to spend three exciting days with us at the Filmfest Düsseldorf.

 Yours sincerely,
The Filmfest-Team
